Symbolorum Oracle Cards

Discover a world in which plants, animals, the moon and the stars each tell their own story. With SYMBOLORUM, perfumer and author Mandy Aftel brings centuries-old symbolism to life in a deck of 60 oracle cards, with a special role for scent.

The cards draw on Joachim Camerarius’s Symbolorum et Emblematum, an emblem book first published more than four centuries ago. Each card features an allegorical engraving, hand-tinted in watercolour by Aftel, accompanied by a motto and a couplet illuminating the meaning of the image.

In the companion guidebook, Aftel explores the layers of meaning within each emblem, weaving her own insights together with the ancient wisdom collected by Camerarius. Drawing on her experience as a perfumer, she also suggests scent pairings for those who wish to enrich their work with the cards through an additional sensory dimension.

Use the cards individually or in spreads as an invitation to reflect, to approach a question from a different perspective or to find inspiration in the imaginative world of nature.

The set complements Aftel’s book Symbolorum: The Secret Wisdom of Emblems, but features an entirely different selection of emblems that have not appeared in a modern edition since their original publication.
